Project: Mackenzie Green Energy Centre

Company: Balanced Power Engineering and Pristine Power

Summary: Balanced Power has partnered with Pristine Power and Harbert Development to develop an economically, environmentally and sociably sustainable project called the Mackenzie Green Energy Centre. This is a $230 million investment.

Using wood waste from BC’s northern interior, the project will have the capacity to produce 65 MW of electricity for the BC Hydro power grid. Through co-generation the project will also be able to supply an economic source of steam to the Pope & Talbot and Canfor mills. This will reduce their reliance on natural gas and make their operations more competitive.

Project: Power Boiler Emissions Upgrade

Company: West Fraser, Williams Lake

Summary: The West Fraser plywood mill in Williams Lake has expressed their need to increase efficiency and reduce emissions from the mill’s power boilers. Balanced Power engineers are currently working to make this happen. The projects that are being undertaken at the mill are as follows:

  • Addition of electrostatic precipitators to reduce emissions.
  • Design and addition of a backend economizer to increase process efficiency.
  • Design and addition of a backend ash collection system and disposal method.
  • Design and addition of overfire and undergrate air modifications to reduce emissions and increase boiler efficiency.
  • Design and addition of the controls system and all the ducting.
  • Analysis of the mill’s entire mass flow process.

Project: Dryer Upgrade

Company: Tolko Industries, Kelowna

Summary: The Tolko Plywood mill in Kelowna has expressed a need to rebuild their No. 1 Dryer. Balanced Power engineers are currently working to improve the mill’s operation by working in conjunction with the plant in completing a dryer rebuild. A complete analysis has been done on the mill’s existing configuration and on its new configuration once the dryer has been upgraded.

Project: Powerhouse Start-Up

Company: Neucel, Port Alice

Summary: Balanced Power Engineering is currently working with Neucel in Port Alice to help bring their powerhouse online. Once this has happened, BPEI will continue working with Neucel to increase the mill’s efficiency and decrease their dependence on Bunker “C” (heavy fuel oil). This is a very “hands on” project that requires analysis from the BPEI engineers who have extensive experience regarding mill processes and operations.

Project: Cogeneration Plant

Company: Confidential

Summary: Balanced Power initiated a 25 MW co-gen installation project for an existing pulp and paper mill based on the purchase and refurbishing of a used T/G set from a shutdown plant. As part of this project evaluation, an auxiliary fuel bypass and mill energy usage study was carried out. The turbine project is now in the construction phase by the mill.

Project: Boiler Upgrades

Company: Tembec - Smooth Rock Falls

Summary: Brought in to revive a struggling boiler Balanced Power managed to turn it around with mechanical and control enhancements. Portions of the project include installing a new overfire air system, redesigning and reconfiguring an existing multicyclone, and installing an intelligent boiler control system. Steam flow was increased two fold and the boiler now runs entirely on economical hog (wood waste) fuel. By offsetting natural gas, huge energy savings were realized.

Project: Emergency Boiler Repair

Company: Teck-Cominco - Trail

Summary: An explosion in the KIVCET boiler in February 2004 caused the Lead South operations to go offline. During a period of high metal prices the urgency to bring the boiler back online prompted a rapid gathering of industry experts. Balanced Power engineers were onsite in a matter of days evaluating the boiler damage and preparing a repair scope. Providing engineering support to CIMS, Balanced Power was involved in the speedy repair of the boiler allowing a restart within 40 days of the failure.
